The percussion program in Red Oak ISD offers students the opportunity to learn about and experience the fascinating world of drumming and the percussive arts. Red Oak Percussion is committed to coaching today's young percussionists to be the well-rounded musicians of tomorrow, by providing opportunities for excellence through expert instruction and various performance and competition opportunities.
Some of these opportunities include...
- Red Oak Marching Band, a well-respected
and beloved part of our community, and the largest student organization
at ROHS! The marching band plays at all football games, pep
rallies, parades, and additionally competes against other bands
at numerous competitions throughout the season; we even host
our own local contest that is growing each year. The marching
band's marquee competition is the UIL Marching Contest where
Red Oak aspires to one day advance to State in San Antonio!
- The front ensemble, or "pit", and marching percussion,
or "battery", make up the Drumline,
an integral part of the marching band that performs not only
at all band events and contests, but also as their own intity.
They can be seen playing at school and community events, marching
through the halls of ROHS to wish our atheletes luck at a playoff
game, or off at their own competitions.
- All-Region Competition (individual), where a percussionist may compete to earn the opportunity to perform with Region 20's top musicians, and even advance to All-State.
- Numerous opportunities to perform and compete with the Red Oak Jazz Band, including the All Region Jazz competition (individual) and multiple jazz band competitions and concerts.
- During the spring marching is put aside so that concert skills can be honed. UIL Solo & Ensemble is a major annual event where percussionists will compete as soloists and in ensembles of 4 or more players to achieve their own Division rating and earn a chance to advance to State Solo & Ensemble in Austin.
- Night of Percussion, maybe Percussion's biggest event of the year, when all percussionists in the district will come together for a huge concert performance for the parents, school, and community. Students typically get multiple opportunities to perform at this annual concert, and have chances to win prizes donated by the local music store, including the usual grand prize, a brand new drum set.
- UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest, where percussionists will perform with a full band to earn a Division rating for their school. This is concert season's most important competition, as consistent success at UIL is critical to our band program's reputation.
- Various band concerts throughout the year, usually including a Fall Concert, Winter Concert, Pre-UIL Concert and Spring Concert.
- Other possible exhibition performances at cool places like the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas!
